Junior Camp at Kennaa 22/23 April

As Summer Camp 2011 was heavily oversubscribed the committee made the decision to move the younger members who had not been to Summer camp before into Junior Camp.

All the young members who would normally have gone to Junior Camp were unfortunately for them, moved back down to Diddy Camp. These decisions were deliberated long and hard by the committee in their endeavour to allow as many children as possible to attend camp in 2011.

The time spent at Junior Camp was extended and meals were provided in an effort to recreate the atmosphere of Summer Camp and give these members a taste for future years. The instructors were Cheryl Curphey, Natalie Pell and Abby Corlett with senior member helpers - Katy Robinson, Charlie Morrey, Danni Callin, Breeshey Evans and Rachel Hopkinson. All instructors and senior members made a huge effort to make the experience of camp as much fun as possible whilst improving the confidence and knowledge of members.

Whilst studying for their Perfect Paddock Achievement Badge the first group created their perfect paddock, whilst the second group created the far from perfect paddock complete with barbed wire, fire and bailer in their very dirty paddock!

Fortunately they all passed their Perfect Paddock Achievement Badge and it was awarded to Holly Low, Freya Cullen, Katilynn Arrowsmith, Molly Fraser, Elle Cain, Abby Jackson, Nell Kennish, Hannagh Geoghegan, Imogen Millward, John Whiteway, Millie Bolt, Kari Bridson, Katy Schreiber, and Zelda Newey.

The Public Speaking badge was awarded to Holly Low, John Whiteway, Elle Cain, Molly Fraser, Kari Bridson, Freya Cullen, Millie Bolt, Zelda Newey, Katie Schreiber and Kaitlynn Arrowsmith.

Kennaa proved to be an ideal location for performing this achievement badge and those members eligible will be taking this badge at Summer Camp.

In the evening after tea the children enjoyed a Treasure Hunt organised by Cheryl and Abby

followed by half an hour of fun and games in the outside arena.

On the second day of camp although the weather was not so good, the members took part in a Combined Training competition where they all performed a dressage test and jumped a course of showjumps.

The results were as follows:-

Ride 1
1st Freya Cullen - Jiggy
2nd Holly Low - Moss
3rd Molly Fraser - Barney
4th Imogen Millward - Eriska
5th Kaitlynn Arrowsmith - Bonnie

Horse and Pony Care - 15 April

The last Friday night Horse and Pony Care session took place on 15th April at Kennaa. Once again there was a great turnout of members and it was lovely to see so many older members attending. As the annual Parents Night was taking place in the Club Room, all members congregated in the outdoor school with AnneMarie in charge. The weather was perfect - not a breath of wind and not even cold! Judging by the volume of noise everyone seemed to have a wonderful time whilst learning the footfalls of a horse, serpentines and various dressage movements. It was a joy to see all the senior membrs encouraging and joining in with the younger members. A very big thankyou to AnneMarie for organising such a fun night! There will be further Horse and Pony Care sessions during the summer but these usually take place during the afternoon - keep checking the website for future dates.

Test Successes

On the 11th/12th April seven members were put forward for their 'C' test, three their 'C+' and there was one 'B' candidate. The examiner for all tests was Pam Prickett and at the end she stressed that all members were up to standard but unfortunately nerves on the day let several members down. This is very normal when taking the Pony Club tests as the standard is high and the test situation does make candidates very nervous. We will be holding more tests in September and hopefully those that were not successful this time will be less nervous next time and pass. Pam did mention that all the candidates looked very smart and were beautifully turned out.

Successful 'C' test candidates Charlotte Shimmin, Charlie Morrey and Emily Kelly

Successful 'C+' Candidates Breeshey Evans and Hannah Scarlett

Katy Robinson passed the Horse Care section of this test.

A very happy Abby Corlett who passed her 'B' Test with flying colours!

WELL DONE TO ALL THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES.

Mylchreests Group to support Isle of Man Pony Club One Day Event

Isle of Man Pony Club is delighted to announce that Mylchreests Group is to sponsor the Club’s Annual Spring ‘One Day Event’ on Sunday 8th May 2011.  This event will be held at Oatlands, Santon, with kind permission from Mr & Mrs D Shacklock.

Managing Director, David Mylchreest, said “We are very pleased to be giving support to the Isle of Man Pony Club as apart from being the Island’s Main Dealers for Land Rover and Mitsubishi products, both well known as the “must have” vehicles to tow horse trailers, we are very keen to be giving direct help to a sport largely participated in by young people”

In addition to this financial assistance Mylchreests will be showing a range of new Land Rover & Mitsubishi products at the event at Oatlands in May.

Mylchreests’ sponsorship of the Pony Club follows recently announced support by the Company for the Commonwealth Youth Games, Southern 100, Manx Grand Prix and IOM 4x4 Club. All of these sponsorship programmes have been arranged in celebration of our 50th anniversary, which is in July 2011.

Each rider competes at Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country.  Pony Club have a new cross country course at Oatlands. The course has been designed by William Blane FBHS and built by Jill, David and Dan Shacklock. There are some new and interesting combinations on the course intended to encourage control and straightness through the fences.

The event has ten classes covering Juniors and Seniors of differing abilities and ages ranging from eight years to adult.

Mylchreests Group have provided rosettes up to sixth place in each of the ten classes, Best Dressage rosette for each class plus Pony/Horse sash for winners of each class.  The winners of each class will also receive a Mylchreests One Day Event Polo Shirt with those in 2nd place receiving Mylchreests One Day Event Baseball Caps.

Presentation of awards will be made at 4.30pm on the day (unmounted but dressed in dressage attire).

Instructors Accreditation Course

As Pony Club is a youth organisation it is a requirement that all our instructors are CRB checked and also that they have attended a Pony Club accreditation course. The simplest method of ensuring that these criteria are fulfilled is to hold an accreditation course here on the island.

Some of our senior instructors have attended the Pony Club National Instructors Conference in Yorkshire which was taken by Yogi Breisner however all our other instructors were invited to attend this course on Monday 11th April. The course was taken by Pam Prickett who is a senior instructor and examiner from Oxenholme Branch of the Pony Club. Pam gave two demonstration lessons the first to three young members - Nicole, Courtney and Ellan who were working towards their 'D' test and the second to three older members Callum, Abigaile and Charlotte who are working towards their 'C' test.

There was a terrific turnout of instructors but unfortunately the temperature had dropped

10 degrees from the previous beautiful day and everyone was frozen! Many thanks to Pam and also everyone who turned up. We hope you found the evening helpful and educational.
